rough out a page this morning for the company that i work for reflecting on the events of September 11th.

i love this. chris pirillo has this post - Grounds for Dismissal - on his blog. It's about a guy who's about to open a coffeeshop, but then pulls the plug before it opens. he says "We just felt that Peet's was a far superior coffee. Hell, even I'd drink it. And that's saying something - because I don't like coffee all that much."

you know your coffee's bad when you buy the coffee you drink from your competition.

for some reason, i'm having another one of those nights. i got up for some reason and my thoughts wouldn't quiet down enough to let me go back to sleep.

one thing of the things that disturbed me was an op ed piece by Crain's Chris Thompson about Clevelands fortunes being left to luck. In his words, "A new model of civic involvement is needed to keep city from dismal fate". The big problem, Chris points out, is that the local organizations who are trying to improve the city's fate are " having their efforts hampered by a civic culture that distrusts public discussion, abhors serious debate and insists on doing things the way they were done 20 years ago."

i know. why worry about the fate of the region that i work in? i can't help it. i care. what really bugs me is the lack of leadership in this area. kudos to chris for having the balls to shed some light on the issue.

i love cyberpunk stories - William Gibson, Bruce Sterling, and Neal Stephenson. this story sounds exactly out of one of their books - The Drone Armies Are Coming - In what sounds like another improbable Star Wars defense system, the Office of Naval Research is working on a drone army that it hopes will be operational by 2020.

I read this headline - Starbucks Tasks Hacker for Encore Acquisition Effort - and thought it meant something completely different.

well, i knew it would happen. i'm using one login to manage both my blogs. i was in a hurry and i posted one of my personals to the business one. oops! at least i caught it.

the cross post was - this is what i'd like to do instead of getting a master's degree (for now) - the weatherhead school of management's affliate program

DMA: DON'T E-MAIL OR CALL ON 9/11 - Citing conflicting consumer studies about marketing on the anniversary of Sept. 11, the Direct Marketing Association this week urged members to refrain from e-mail and telephone marketing on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The DMA noted in a statement that several companies, particularly those that use broadcast advertising, already have announced their decisions to pull ads on Sept. 11. While direct mailers and catalogers have difficulty controlling the exact time their marketing material reaches consumers, e-mailers and telemarketers enjoy more control over the timing of their marketing messages and should respect consumer sensitivities, the DMA said.

Size is Not a Strategy - The faster big business cleans up its ethical mess, the sooner we can address the real crisis of capitalism. Giant companies dominate the landscape -- from media to medicine, banking to broadband. But talented people don't want to work for them, customers hate doing business with them, and Wall Street doesn't want to invest in them. A candid appraisal of why so many big companies ( even the honest ones ) don't work -- and some radical ideas for reform.

i really like my job. yesterday was a good day at work. it's really strange to get used to. for twelve years i worked at a manufacturing company. hated it. now, i actually look forward to going to work. there was a snafu yesterday with a ups package. i called the company that sent it and ups. both companies were totally helpful and made sure i was taken care of. thanks!

i also take to a few people that were great to talk to. you know who you are. thanks again!

You are 59% geek
You are a geek. Good for you! Considering the endless complexity of the universe, as well as whatever discipline you happen to be most interested in, you'll never be bored as long as you have a good book store, a net connection, and thousands of dollars worth of expensive equipment. Assuming you're a technical geek, you'll be able to afford it, too. If you're not a technical geek, you're geek enough to mate with a technical geek and thereby get the needed dough. Dating tip: Don't date a geek of the same persuasion as you. You'll constantly try to out-geek the other.

i'll get to the friday five later. i would probably be bad netiquette to follow the this or that tuesday with the fridayfive, especially when there were interesting things that happened between them.

wednesday was the power breakfast sponsered by COSE. the subject was Media Relations - tips, tools and tactics. very informative. a panel discussion of a media consultant and members of the local media. got to talk with Chris Thompson of Crain's and CrainTech. he told me that his mother and father retired to a coffee farm in Guatemala. ahhh. what a way to retire.

yesterday, was NEOSA's techthursday at the Great Lakes Brewing Company. Chris and I talked more about his mother and father's farm. he also said that they give farm tours. one of these day's i'll have to visit. also had some excellent conversations with some local people about developing the IT industry in the Cleveland area, and why things were developing so slowly. Thanks Harry, Christine, and Brad for letting me offer my two cents.

at it again. this time, probably the beer and cigarettes are what's keeping me up. two hours after falling asleep - BAM - wide awake. at least the beer was good. great lakes brewing company - lockeeper lager. the occasion was a visit from our friends at ipa. we spent a few hours at the wing house. here's a shout out to big jim - "thanks bro!" check out this google search of the day... so while i'm wide awake, i turned on the tv. sometimes, there's a good reason i'm awake. this was one of them. got to watch big thinkers on techtv.

While Turkle is captivated by the impact of today's technologies, she has an eye on the future. Much of her research is centered on how today's children are affected by technology, especially since they are often surrounded by toys that, unlike the building blocks of yesterday, seem very much alive. How will these high tech toys shape who the children become?
then read a little walt whitman -
"THERE was a child went forth every day, And the first object he look'd upon, that object he became, And that object became part of him for the day or a certain part of the day, Or for many years or stretching cycles of years"

the good thing about using pay per view on direct tv is not having to go to the video store to rent movies. the bad thing is not seeing the movies until they're release on dvd AND they schedule them. finally watched 'a beautiful mind'. good flick. here's a google search of the day - john nash

i love the smell of coffee roasting in the morning. I roasted two batches this morning, one regular and one decaf. because of my blood pressure, i was supposed to reduce the amount of coffee i drink per day. instead, i just cut the caffiene by mixing a half and half blend. i buy my beans from Sweet Maria's and roast them in a Hearthware roaster. i currently favor beans from central america. i usually get beans grown in indonesia, but i needed a change. anyway, the result is "damn fine coffee" as agent cooper would say...

Klez tops the virus charts - Yet again, variants of the Klez worm were by far the most common viruses circulating on the Internet this month. That's according to MessageLabs which stopped more than 475,000 copies of the virus in July, down from in excess of 788,000 infected emails it blocked in June. It's the fourth month in succession that Klez has topped monthly virus charts.
