Greetings from Riga #2

The Art + Communication conference is pretty cool... lots of artists, activists and uber geeks. Many presentations accompanied by ambient electronica. Many presentations reveal early projects trying some weird stuff. The food here is great, old-style Latvian and many European dishes, and Europeanized American food like Pizza, Burgers, and Chicken sandwiches[and a fabulous Indian restaurant!]. Cant' get away from McDonald's though... "I'm Lovin It" on the side of many busses... barf! Just like "Nobody Walks in LA", everyone walks here. What is amazing is to watch women wearing the latest fashion craze here navigate the cobblestone streets. The latest fashion craze here is a very, very pointed dress shoe with a fairly high heel. The pointed toes adds many inches to the shoe. Once these shoes get worn in, the extended pointy toe tends to curl up, giving kind of an Aladdin effect... shazaam! The other hot fashion trend is candy-apple red hair color... Silvija keeps threatening to get her hair this color before we return to the States. Yikes! One of the key themes in this conference is the mixing of media... i.e. GIS maps and network maps [with some tweaking] as art. I have had a few people tell me that my network diagrams remind them of a Jackson Pollack painting. The evenings are reserved for performances... electronic music and various images and computer graphics... way cool! I'm lovin it! ....oops, sorry. All conference rooms have a strong WIFI signal. Yeah! BTW, Apple Powerbooks outnumber wintel laptops by 4 to 1. Valdis
