Ed Morrison · Launch House launches
April 18th, 2011
A new accelerator launches…
LaunchHouse has 12 portfolio companies under its umbrella, developing products in fields such as medical, energy, agriculture and recreation. The city will receive 10 percent of the draw from these businesses as well as a 3 percent equity stake in LaunchHouse through a deal in which the city will pay the rent and property taxes for LaunchHouse for four years.
There’s been a lot of talk from the policy wonks about “entrepreneurial eco-systems” lately. But how do you develop them?
Oklahoma City’s strategy, which we launched in 1995, has put that city on the map as an entrepreneurial hotspot.
In Charleston, SC, Ernest Andrade and I developed the strategy for the Charleston Digital Corridor literally on napkins at a number of breakfast meetings. We launched the Corridor in 2001.
Now Oklahoma CIty and Charleston are now ranked #2 and #3 (behind Austin) in the creation and support for small firms. Read more.
The message: You don’t need a lot of money to create an “eco-system”. You need agile strategy, pragmatic ingenuity, and relentless focus.
Looks like the folks at the Launch House are headed down the right path.
