Last night, I went to the birthday party for one of the leaders of the Chinese community based in the Cleveland Clinic. He made the point that in the early 1990’s only a handful of Chinese scientists worked at the Clinic. Now there are over 300.

After plenty of delightful home-made food, good wishes and a raucous rendition of “Happy Birthday”, he made a brief and impressive statement about the importance of the commitment of the older generation to the Chinese children now growing up in Cleveland. It’s easy for me, a native Clevelander, to see a bright future in the face of these children.

I also had the opportunity to sit with a Chinese PhD and talk about his experiences in the Cultural Revolution. Our conversation holds lessons for the most rabid of the Tea Party.

My friend’s message: “We had complete personal freedom in the Cultural Revolution. As a young boy, I could do anything, including smashing the desks at my school and criticizing government officials. But in the end, I got nothing in return. Individual freedom holds no value, if it is not balanced with a responsible government.”
