Ed Morrison · Workforce perspectives from Dallas
May 7th, 2009

In Dallas this week, 600 workforce development professionals from nine states got together to explore how to transform the public workforce system. The challenge: How to guide the system toward more responsive, flexible services.
It’s a big challenge. Congress has expanded the system by about 50% in the Recovery Act. Over the past three days, we have been conducting Strategic Doing workshops to equip these professionals with new tools to build collaborations with employers and educators.
Some useful insights:
Houston stands as a leader in adopting Web 2.0 solutions. Corpus Christi has the leading summer youth initiative. Steel Valley Authority has a leading model for integrating services to firms facing major downsizing. Colorado will be moving ahead with additional forums on strategic doing next week. Dallas has the leading initiative underway in prisoner re-entry. The Heldrich Center on Workforce Development at Rutgers has cut through a lot of the fog about “green jobs”
