“Casinos, they are, for lack of a better phrase, a one-stop shop. Once they get you indoors they want to keep you there,” said Jacob Evans, vice president of government affairs for the Ohio Licensed Beverage Association. The OLBA opposes Issue 3 and paid for the Hiram College report.

Once again, a highly-touted “civic initiative” which has NOTHING to do with economic development. To pretend otherwise is simply to ignore the overwhelming preponderance of evidence.
Simply demonstrates that our “civic leaders” are 1) bereft of ideas and 2) incapable of embarrassment.

A Cleveland casino will not reach the threshold of attracting outside visitors; the threshold is 60% of total visitors.
As a result, a Cleveland casino will drain the region of income. That’s true for other casinos in Ohio.
This state is surrounded by casinos. The best economic development strategy — to reduce the heavy social costs of casinos — is keep them out.
No one has done a fiscal impact analysis on a casino in Cuyahoga County. The added costs will be significant. Political leaders are clueless to the impacts.
I’ve spent a good deal of time studying the impacts of casinos on local economies, and, with precious few exceptions, the results are not good.

Ed–our so-called leaders think that the Detroit model is the bomb. Literally, they would demolish, destroy, and burn over our city to make a buck. The failure of local leadership is biblical. Sodom and Gomorrah…were nothing in comparison.

If anyone can create a popular downtown attraction…it is Dan Gilbert…
October 28th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Nobody has bothered to explore why Dan Gilbert is investing heavily in entrepreneurship networks in Detroit while promoting a casino in CLE. Why not engage him in a discussion about his thoughts on entrepreneurial networks in CLE?

Maybe because Gilbert thinks Cleveland is full of suckers? After all, he did get the Cavs for a song.

“Gilbert is considering expanding the program (Bizdom) to other cities, starting with Cleveland.”
