Toni Chanakas · I’m NEVER Home.
February 13th, 2009
I realize that I haven’t been posting as much lately for a few reasons. I am currently attending Cleveland State University and my time is limited. And, I haven’t found anything interesting to write about until a friend of mine just couldn’t believe, “Toni, you are never home.” I thought, I can write about the validity of that statement.
Why I am NOT at home? For one, the idea of watching TV all day long and cleaning and/or vacuuming is a complete waste of my time. Plus, who can I talk to that can give me some insights as to why I’m not working or any intelligent conversation. I posted a while back that everyone needs structure in his or her day. Therefore, I am out of the house pretty early. I either jog outdoors when it is above zero degrees, or travel to the Bally Total Fitness in Willoughby Hills. But mostly, you will find me at my office located at the Euclid Public Library in an independent study room. Besides, I love the free things in life such as WiFi. I don’t have cable either.
Believe it or not, I can only get things done at the library. When I am at home, I procrastinate especially when I need to write a paper or do a freelance assignment. I find many reasons NOT to sit at my computer and do work. That is the time when I proceed down to the basement and do laundry, organize some bills (well, they are still piled high on an old desk), or wash the kitchen floor. Motivation is becoming increasingly difficult now that I am getting older. Not that I am old by any means. I am the “new” twenty. Also, when you have a job, your boss, clients, or your employees give you strict deadlines that must be adhered to. That is what I miss about working, the social interaction, contributing to society and having a place to go on a daily basis.
So, I am out and about most days. I volunteer at Seeds of Literacy, tutoring learners in obtaining their GED two days a week that I find very rewarding. My new passion for adult learners is the reason I chose to go back to school and follow my heart. In teaching or in the training capacity, I can somehow give back to the community.
How are other people filling up the day? Perhaps it’s on facebook, or some other social media sites or face-to-face contact. I prefer to sit at a restaurant or bar and catch up with my friends and family. What ever it is, don’t call my house before 9PM; because, I won’t be home. Therefore, I am NEVER home.
This post is dedicated to Linda. Thanks for the great idea.
