The air is cool, the fog is in. A lone boat sits near the restaurant where my wife and I meet her medical school classmates. Her class was the first to start medical school after the Cultural Revolution.
Her classmates have now reached the top levels of Zhejiang University Medical School. A vice dean, several department chairs. One former teacher is now vice president of the Zhejiang Institute of Fine Arts.
I’ve not seen anyone write about this change, but in the next five years these professionals will replace many of the existing leaders of Chinese institutions. The older leaders attained their positions through their political connections. The younger leaders are rising on their merit.
