“(CSU President) Berkman also has asked two current administrators to help speed along his priorities of establishing a K-12 public school on campus and bringing in more grants.
Julian Earls, an executive-in-residence at CSU’s business college since 2006 and retired director of the NASA Glenn Research Center, will work with the Cleveland School District to establish the new campus school, Berkman said.”

According to the University of Illinois, 85 Education Colleges in the USA operate a laboratory school.
Such schools typically partner with a local school district and foster a learning enviroment that values cutting edge techniques, student-centered instruction, and diversity (student/staff make-up & teaching styles). Typically such schools are training grounds for new teachers as well; thus an investment in a lab school in Cleveland is a win-win for emerging professional teachers and students.
The University of Chicago has been operating their lab school since 1896. The school is composed of a lower, middle, and high school serving a total of 1700 students. It is highly regarded in the community and consistently ranks among the best. The only down side is that Lab is a private school, meaning there is a tuition cost. It will be interesting to see if CMSD’s lab school will be public or private. Regardless, this is an exciting development for our downtown and the whole Cuyahoga bio-region.
