Ed Morrison · CLE WiFi…Part 2
May 6th, 2009
It’s funny how your attention focuses. After I wrote my post on the poor quality of CLE WiFi, I started paying closer attention to airport WiFi.
First, I was sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting for my flight to Dallas, when I overheard an ad on airport television talking about the many WiFi options at the Atlanta airport.

Next, while sitting in the plane to Dallas, I pick up the AirTran magazine, and there is an ad for the Dayton airport. Number five on the list of five reasons you should consider Dayton’s airport? Free WiFi.
Then this morning, I receive a tweet from the Akron Canton Airport:
@edmorrison Saw your post on CLE airport. Next time give CAK a try. Our FREE Wi-Fi always works! Can we offer you a day of free parking?
I’ll take them up on the offer.

I’m no technology genius, but isn’t this a problem which can be fixed cheaply in about a week?…Unless, of course, the current vendor paid their graft five years in advance…

Exactly. The fact that you have one vendor providing shoddy service raises questions. Why not multiple vendors? Or, why not free?
This would be a good opportunity for a news hound to explore the relationships out at the airport: the wireless deal; the suspicious taxi deal; the Starbucks withdrawal; parking deals; the rental car facility (who owned the land?)

You mean Wi-Fi ISN’T free at CLE? Outrageous. What can we be thinking?

CAK is a good airport. Lots of inexpensive flights and low congestion. What about wireless in Pittsburgh and Columbus?
