With pending shifts coming to NorTech, maybe now Cleveland can focus on a big opportunity: developing a cluster of new businesses in creative digital media.

This economic development opportunity is sitting on Cleveland’s doorstep, but the leadership has yet to move on it. At REI, we explored the tremendous potential of this cluster for Northeast Ohio, but we were unable to get the leadership of NorTech or the GCP interested.

The Cleveland Institute of Art had no better luck with its initiative at the FUTURE Center. (And the District of Design is, well, who knows?)

You only need to look at Ontario to see this strategy in action. (The best examples of this strategy are in Europe, though, in places like Vienna.)

For example, the Niagara Interactive Media Generator – or nGen – is a new media incubator with multiple partners.

This week, the Ontario government announced it would be expanding its investments in this cluster. Details are on the Ontario Digital Media Corporation web site.
