Rick Pollack · Wiki Talk

I’ve been working quite a bit with MediaWiki lately – the engine that runs Wikipedia. I’ve also done some informal polling and it doesn’t appear that many people have created or edited a page on Wikipedia or other Wikimedia Foundation site (sites like Wikipedia on other topics, Wiktionary, for example).
So, I’m wondering if anyone would like to meet at a coffee shop, library or elsewhere for an Introduction to Wikimedia session. If you are interested, comment here or email me directly. Thanks.

Hi – I’d be up for an intro to wikimedia session.

What a generous offer! Yes, Rick, I’d love to learn. Maybe I can learn on that “next up entry for Cleveland” we corresponded about…
You know how to reach me.

Library…meet at a LIBRARY…I have one in mind. You know how to reach me, too

I started a wiki at http://www.plaspace.org/node/600 to discuss the recent reintroduction of the Accelerated Reader program in Cleveland area schools.

Laura – which library should we use? What kind of space is available? Is there wireless Internet access? Any form of projection?
If you have any interest, please express it here or email me rick@rickpollack.com (or you can email George). If it will only be a few of us, we can just use any PC or laptop with wireless access. Otherwise, I will just need to figure out a space. I can also look into a way of doing it online…
Four people have expressed interest so far…

Sign me up Rick.

Getting a date(s)/time figured out. Should have it in the next day or two. Six people have expressed interest, so it will probably be at a coffee shop.

Aw come on…I have the use of a projector and large screen…what coffee shop can boast that? Talkies??? If so, then I will go…it’s west side and sorry…I am staying close to home these days.

George – The Brooklyn Branch sounds like a good place to hold Cleveland SMC hands-on events – per the discussion at the last meeting.

I’d be willing to come. Make it after the holidays.
Brooklyn Branch is OK, maybe another site closer to downtown would be more convenient in future.

Memorial Nottingham is an option for east-siders…open late on Monday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays (with ample parking)…Downtown is also always an option during regular business hours. I can run phone lines to reserve the space at any one of these locations, when a date and time is finalized. Brooklyn Branch has no official parking, but it is well served by public transportation and there is an adjacent shopping plaza that allows parking. It’s small, but BIG at the same time

Let’s talk about the Blue Danube next Wednesday. Neutral turf:

That is fine. We will hold a Wiki session at Dewey’s on the 17th (Shaker Square). I can be there at 5:00 if anyone would like to do the wiki stuff before the RealNeo event – just let me know your preference…

Great idea George,
I’ll have to check my schedule. After the Case Western Reserve Wiki was launched, some of us there had talked about trying to build one for Cleveland as well, but it never got traction.
I think one of the main reasons is that many people are still intimidated by Wiki’s. I had worked with a few people at school whom I thought could use the Wiki for some of their Web-based communications, but they were still confused by the structure. I thought it would be a simple alternative for people who didn’t know HTML, but they were still confused by both the MediaWiki code and the organizational structure.
I think it is a tool that could get much more use if people learned more about it.

I did not hear from anyone regarding 5:00 PM, so I am planning on being at Dewey’s around 5:30.
