Toni Chanakas · The Job Prospecting
July 10th, 2008
One of my first posts back in February was my recent layoff from a small marketing company in Akron. It was a bit of a shock; but I was confident with all of my networking efforts, positive attitude and a few really supportive friends that I was going to get my new job soon. I am on month six; and I feel like I have worked really hard in explored many options that I never thought I would be able to do. For one, I have been pretty successful cold calling in getting “informational interviews.” I do use Linkedin to find people in many industries that were not possible even a few years ago. I have become a huge networker; and offer many suggestions in my job groups. I keep myself busy volunteering, going to as many events as possible to meet new people, and of course, cycling.
Now, I am getting nervous in my job prospects because all I hear, as of late, is how bad the economy is. The unemployment has increased to over 6% and the housing foreclosure crisis will get even worse before things rebound. Everyone is leaving Cleveland; but I still see new housing being built along the Lakefront, which in a recent Crain’s Article, that is what people want. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cleveland and I live in North Collinwood. I am trying very hard to be optimistic that the Euclid Corridor will turn things around. Why doesn’t the city or Cleveland+ market city as a great place to live with great things to do year round?
I want to hear from others in my similar situation.

well i sympathize with your situation i can only hope you will find a good job and stay in the area, we are struggling with huge cost increases and diminished customer flow with everyone else we are trying to cut our expenses as best we can.the pressure is a tremendous drain on our mental and physical state. on the other side yesterday in twinsburg we sold out our entire inventory for the farm mkt. in 2 hours it lasts 4 hrs. and we could have sold more.it is interesting to hear customers comments about price and quality. again i hope you have some good luck in your job search

But Phil Gramm says our perception of a bad economy is all “mental.” OMG, could he be wrong?

You gotta hang in there! You’re doing all the right moves. Be wary of cashing out the 401k, reverse mortgages etc if the cash crunch becomes too hard.

That is Great about the Farmer’s Market. I definitely need to get into that routine. I am a huge recycler, and I definitely want to do more as far as Green initiatives.
