George Nemeth · Police union’s thinking behind the times
July 11th, 2008
Don’t expect bicycle cops in your neighborhood anytime soon. From Marc Lefkowitz on GCBL:
When a small group of patrolmen under McCartney’s command discovered a dozen bikes collecting dust in a storage locker, they rescued and cobbled together a half-a-dozen rideable bicycles by combining parts.
It seems like a happy ending, except the six officers aren’t so much patrolling on bikes as they are “skulking around” on them, says Lois Moss, founder of Walk + Roll Cleveland, who is advocating to make Cleveland Police on bikes a legit operation.
“The police union does not want officers riding bicycles because they want it to be a separate Unit whereby it gets special funding,” Moss explains. “They also are saying that officers should get paid more to ride a bicycle as opposed to use a car or a motorcycle or a horse.”
That way of thinking is behind the times, Moss says.

George, please update the post to be more positive because things have moved forward considerably. Much of the post is out of context and out-of-date. Also, I haven’t talked directly to anyone from the union who is against bicycles…I have only talked to officers who are in favor of them, so I am hearing their side of the issue and possibly not getting the whole story.
CPD is currently training officers and either has them on bicycles right now or will very soon. Hopefully we will see more and more officers on bicycles…it is good for their health, the dynamic between officers and citizens is improved, it saves the City money, it leads to a greener and cleaner Cleveland plus patrolling around schools and similar areas is better.

well im not sure how to put a positive spin on the fact that more money for a special unit should be added before cops ride bikes! I think more money needs to go in that direction for more cops, but bikes should be saving money and helping get policemen and policewomen out into the neighborhoods up close and personal.
Lois I hope you are correct and we do. In the meantime if we add our two cents maybe it helps them know we want it to happen
