Some of your readers can tell when you’re adding a link to provide important context and when you’re adding a link to boost your google rank. As you read the article it becomes more and more clear that he’s talking abut the second. A “possibly related posts” feature like in Wordpress would be a less insulting alternative.

Yikes. I really wasn’t very clear at all in my comment. First of all, I’m referring to your first link above about “smart internal linking.” And when I say “your readers can tell,” I’m referring to a hypothetical blogger following the advice in the article. Then when I say “as you read the article,” I’m referring to us reading this post and the comments.
Sorry for the confusion. It would have been a lot easier for me to make those things clear in my original comment.
