we took a 41 North trip out in the islands (can't remember which one we left from?) but it was a great trip and I felt a great sense of accomplishment having kayaked for quite a few miles (some of it in open water). My only issue with kayaking in Lake Erie is the sense that the boaters are not exactly responsible -- I worry I'm going to get run over by some drunken fool in a power boat. But that's just me being paranoid maybe

I see several problems with your kayak trip:

1. Can't actually see the bottom of the lake.
2. The water is over 6 feet deep in unknown and unknowable spots.
3. There are live things swimming around (e.g., lamprey eels).

Other than those little problems, it sounds like a great excursion.
