Toni Chanakas · Halloween Costumes
October 30th, 2008
Since it will be Halloween very soon, I thought I would write something festive. I realize it has been a long time since I posted something.
I want to ask, what were some of your most interesting, and inventive costumes? One particular costume that I remember very clearly was when I was about eight years old. My next-door neighbor and I dressed up as “dice.” I remember her sister got 2 square boxes and painted them white. Then she took the time and painted all those black circles. Is there a name for those? I remember what a great idea. We dressed in black turtlenecks and leotards. The only problem with the costume was everyone thought we were dominoes. We both couldn’t believe it. Dominoes have a black background with white circles and are rectangular not square. It was the joke of the night. Back then, my friend and I got pillowcases and tried to get as much candy as possible. It lasted until Thanksgiving.
My other costume consisted of the Johnny Depp rendition of Captain Jack Sparrow. It actually turned out pretty good. I went thrifting to get some floppy pants and a white top. I already had a long wig with I decorated with different color beads. Everyone got a kick out of it; or at least everyone knew who I was supposed to be.
Last year, I took my passion for recycling in a new direction. I took all those annoying grocery plastic bags and made a skirt and top. I also wore fish net stockings and boots. I called myself, “Miss Recycling USA 2007.” This time, I wore a blond wig. I often wondered how it would feel like being a blond. Another pretty good costume, nobody recognized me.
That is what I enjoy most about Halloween. You can dress up to look like whomever you feel like. I love wearing wigs and makeup. Plus, I enjoy seeing all the creative thought processes people come up with. What a real treat.
I surmise there will be a few Sarah Palin’s walking around town. Don’t be afraid
I also want to thank everyone who comments on my posts and who reads them as well. And thanks to George as well for letting me post my creative, sometimes-mindless thoughts.
Happy Halloween 2008.

The spots on dice are called ‘pips’.

I used to be much more inventive as a kid. I remember going as Cleopatra, a geisha, a dinosaur, and a Spanish dancer.
Now I find myself scrambling around and just not bothering as much, which is too bad.

In our younger days, my wife (then girlfriend) would dress up every year and head for Kent for Halloween. Some of our better costumes were vampires, mickey and minnie mouse, buckwheat and alfalfa (that was the BEST one). As we started having kids we’d bring them into it to. They were doctors to us as patients, and once we were so convincing as a nerd family that someone offered to buy our baby girl clothes becuase we looked so poor.
