Senator Voinovich is taking a national leadership role in pushing changes to the Workforce Investment Act that will accelerate innovation. A variety of efforts are underway across 39 regions to integrate education, economic development and workforce development.
On March 11, Senator Voinovich introduced the WIRED Act (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development) to promote continued innovation.
Sen. Voinovich’s bill will allow regions to effectively align education, workforce and economic development systems toward meeting regional economic needs. It provides a framework through which regions can:
• Identify assets, opportunities and risks;
• Establish regional economic goals; and
• Develop workforce and economic development strategies that will help achieve those goals.

The irony, of course, is that Ohio and Cleveland are generally behind the curve on all these reforms.
Traditional politics tends to resist changes to the public workforce system (not just in Cleveland, but elsewhere as well). Critics see these changes as “undermining” their system. Each year, Cuyahoga County gets between $15 million and $20 million in public workforce funds.
